Lena Kriström Kulin, Uppsala, född 1953 i Östersund, Sverige. 5-Årig högskoleutbildning på Konsthögskolan i Stockholm avslutad 1984.
Jag arbetar med granit, marmor- och kalkstenar i min ateljé i Uppsala, ibland i södra Frankrike och i Italien. Sedan 1993 har jag varje vinter återvänt till Icehotel i Jukkasjärvi för att där skulptera i is och snö.
I mitt skapande utgår jag ofta från den ursprungliga formen i materialet och hugger sedan fram det jag ser och vill uttrycka.
Jag tecknar mycket, det är viktigt bl.a. för att jag också i tuschlinjerna hittar många former och uttryck som jag kan omvandla i sten och is.
Jag undervisar ibland blivande landskapsarkitekter på lantbruksuniversitetet i Uppsala. Där handleder jag bl.a. kursen ”isprojekt”. I många år har jag också undervisat i teckning och skulptur på Wiks Folkhögskola utanför Uppsala.
Mina skulpturer visas på gallerier runt om i Sverige och jag har även gjort offentliga uppdrag till bl.a. kommuner och landsting.
Sculptor Lena Kriström
I am a Swedish sculptress and drawing artist. I was born in 1953 in Östersund in northern Sweden. My formal art education started about 1972 in various art schools and was finished with five years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. My real education has only begun.
For the better part of the year I live and work outside Uppsala, Sweden. Increasingly for some years I have also started living and working near Narbonne in southern France, where I also find much of my stone material and inspiration.
Stone is of course my essential working material presently. Another favourite material is the ice. Each winter I spend some weeks at the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, far north of the polar circle in northern Sweden, to carve the ice as well as perform courses on university level for landscape architects.
In the creational process I often let the natural shape/form of the workpiece guide me to an expression that I find interesting. Sometimes, but rarely, do I work with clay. I prefer working from the outside inwards. I´ve been working a lot with concrete molding, but lately I have come to prefer the precision of bronze or plaster molding. I also do a lot of drawing, and sometimes in my drawings do I find lines or concepts that wants to be to transformed into the stone or the ice.
I work mainly with figurative, semi-naturalistic motifs and to me the human face and body always is a never-ending subject of fascination, inspiration and challenge.
